More meaningful work experience period (TET) for young people

Alma Media, Monster and the Children and Youth Foundation are working together to develop a service that aims to significantly increase the number of available work experience periods (TET) in Finland. The aim is also to make TET periods more meaningful for both employers and interns and encourage more companies and young people to use the opportunity of TET.

A number of young people and educational institutions are involved in the development. Improving the equality of young people in their access to work life is one of the key objectives of the project. The Ministry of Education and Culture supports the project to involve young people in need of special support for TET periods.

Acquaintance with working life, or TET, is an activity under the formal curriculum. The three-year development project is based largely on the development opportunities of TET periods highlighted by the report by the Finnish Government published in Spring 2022.

All TET openings available in one place in the future

The first phase of the joint project between Alma Media, Monster and the Children and Youth Foundation will design and produce guides, support and training materials for both companies involved in TETs and for young people entering internships.

“The TET periods offered in different parts of Finland will be displayed in one service. The intention is that several young people can also participate in one company’s TET period at the same time, so that it will be possible to increase the number of young people who are introduced to the working life nationwide”, says Elina Kukkonen, Director of Communications and Brand at Alma Media.

“TET periods are the first experience of working life for many young people. At best they open up many opportunities in working life and emphasize the importance of a good work community, inspires new learning, but also gives a realistic view of the challenges of working life. Thus, the sometimes perceived “gap”, between young people entering the workforce and experienced professionals in companies, narrows”, Elina continues.

In Finland, enthusiastic experts are needed in many different fields and at best the TET period raises interest in the career path and offers employers opportunity to attract future employees into their field.
